Assisi Tour

Morning: Exploring Assisi’s Religious and Historical Heart

  1. Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi
Begin your day at the Basilica of San Francesco, Assisi’s most famous landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This stunning basilica is dedicated to Saint Francis, the patron saint of Italy. The basilica is divided into two parts: the Upper Basilica and the Lower Basilica, both filled with magnificent frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue, and other famous artists. Be sure to visit the tomb of Saint Francis in the crypt of the Lower Basilica, a deeply spiritual place for reflection.

  2. Piazza del Comune
After visiting the basilica, walk up to Piazza del Comune, the heart of Assisi’s civic life. This beautiful square is surrounded by medieval buildings, including the Palazzo dei Priori and the Temple of Minerva, a well-preserved Roman temple that dates back to the 1st century BC. The temple was converted into a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, during the Middle Ages. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of ancient Roman and medieval architecture in this central spot.

  3. Chiesa Nuova and the Birthplace of Saint Francis
Just a short walk from Piazza del Comune, visit the Chiesa Nuova, a church built over the supposed birthplace of Saint Francis. This small church has a charming interior and offers insight into the early life of the saint. Nearby, you can also visit Casa di San Francesco, a simple house that tradition holds was the home of Saint Francis’ family.

Late Morning: Spirituality and Scenic Views

  1. Basilica of Santa Chiara
Head towards the Basilica of Santa Chiara, dedicated to Saint Clare, a follower of Saint Francis and founder of the Order of Poor Clares. The church’s pink and white striped facade is striking, and inside, you’ll find the crucifix that is said to have spoken to Saint Francis, urging him to rebuild the church. You can also visit the crypt, where the body of Saint Clare is interred.

  2. Rocca Maggiore
For panoramic views of Assisi and the surrounding countryside, take a walk to the Rocca Maggiore, a medieval fortress located on the hill above the town. The walk may be steep, but the views from the top are well worth it. You can explore the fortress and its towers, which offer sweeping vistas of Assisi, the Umbrian valley, and beyond.

Afternoon: Churches and Sacred Sites

  1. San Damiano
After visiting Rocca Maggiore, make your way to San Damiano, a small church just outside the town’s walls. This is the site where Saint Francis had his spiritual revelation, and it is also where Saint Clare lived and founded her religious order. The peaceful surroundings and simple church make it a perfect spot for quiet reflection. The crucifix that spoke to Saint Francis was originally housed here before being moved to the Basilica of Santa Chiara.

  2. Eremo delle Carceri
Next, drive or walk to the Eremo delle Carceri, located in the woods of Mount Subasio, just a few kilometers outside Assisi. This hermitage was a retreat for Saint Francis and his followers, and it remains a quiet, spiritual place today. You can explore the caves where the monks lived, the small chapel, and the peaceful forest paths. The Eremo offers a serene escape from the town, and you can follow in the footsteps of Saint Francis as you walk through the natural surroundings he loved.

Late Afternoon: Final Reflections

  1. Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli
End your day with a visit to the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, located in the valley below Assisi. This impressive basilica houses the Porziuncola, a small chapel where Saint Francis founded the Franciscan Order and where he passed away in 1226. The Porziuncola is the spiritual heart of the basilica and one of the most important pilgrimage sites for followers of Saint Francis. You can also visit the Cappella del Transito, the room where Saint Francis died.

  2. Walk through Assisi’s Streets
Before leaving, take a final walk through Assisi’s cobblestone streets. The town’s medieval architecture, quiet alleys, and stone houses give Assisi a timeless charm. You may want to stop at one of the panoramic viewpoints in town to admire the sunset over the Umbrian valley, bringing your day of exploration and reflection to a peaceful close.
