Perugia Tour

Morning: Exploring Perugia’s Historic Center

  1. Piazza IV Novembre and Fontana Maggiore
Start your day in Piazza IV Novembre, the heart of Perugia. This beautiful square is surrounded by historic buildings and features the Fontana Maggiore, a stunning medieval fountain dating back to the 13th century. Take time to admire the intricate carvings and sculptures that depict biblical scenes, astrological symbols, and important moments in Perugian history.

  2. Perugia Cathedral (Cattedrale di San Lorenzo)
Located in the same square, visit the Perugia Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The cathedral’s simple Gothic exterior contrasts with its rich interior, where you’ll find beautiful frescoes, artwork, and the Holy Ring, a relic that is believed to be the wedding ring of the Virgin Mary.

  3. Palazzo dei Priori and the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria
Just a few steps away is the Palazzo dei Priori, one of the most iconic buildings in Perugia, dating back to the 13th century. Inside, you’ll find the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, home to one of the most important collections of Umbrian and Italian art. Spend some time exploring masterpieces by Piero della Francesca, Perugino, and Pinturicchio, among others. This is a must-see for art lovers.

Late Morning: Historical Exploration and Scenic Views

  1. Rocca Paolina
After the Galleria, head towards the Rocca Paolina, a fortress built in the 16th century by Pope Paul III. What makes it unique is that parts of the old city are preserved beneath the fortress. Explore the underground streets and rooms of Perugia Sotterranea (Underground Perugia), where you can walk through ancient alleyways and imagine life in medieval times.

  2. Corso Vannucci
After visiting Rocca Paolina, take a stroll along Corso Vannucci, the main street of Perugia. This pedestrian street is lined with beautiful historic buildings, shops, and galleries, making it a perfect place to soak up the lively atmosphere of the city. As you walk, you’ll pass important landmarks such as the Palazzo della Penna and the Church of Sant’Ercolano.

Afternoon: Artistic and Religious Heritage

  1. San Pietro Basilica
Head towards the southern part of the city to visit the San Pietro Basilica, one of Perugia’s most impressive churches. Built in the 10th century, the basilica is known for its richly decorated interior, featuring works of art, frescoes, and a beautiful wooden choir. The adjoining Orto Medievale (Medieval Garden) is a peaceful spot to explore and offers wonderful views of the surrounding countryside.

  2. Church of San Domenico
Next, visit the Church of San Domenico, which is one of the largest churches in Perugia. Built in the 14th century, it has a striking Gothic structure and houses the Perugia Archaeological Museum. The museum itself is fascinating, featuring collections of Etruscan, Roman, and medieval artifacts, including ancient tombs and sculptures that reveal Perugia’s long history.

Late Afternoon: Views and Relaxation

  1. Etruscan Well (Pozzo Etrusco)
After your visit to San Domenico, head to the Etruscan Well, a fascinating piece of Perugia’s Etruscan heritage. This ancient well, built in the 3rd century BC, is a marvel of engineering and offers insight into the city’s ancient past. You can descend into the well and explore the underground chambers that were used to supply water to the city.

  2. Porta Sole and Views of Perugia
End your day by heading to Porta Sole, the highest point in Perugia. From here, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city’s rooftops, towers, and the surrounding Umbrian countryside.
